How to Take Care of Carpets

Carpets are great. They are beautiful, dynamic, wonderful and a great way to add a splash of color to an otherwise dull room. Over time however, the constant to and from of feet can wreak havoc on the plush fibers of a carpet. Infrequent care can lead to disaster of even the best carpets. It is important that you take time out of your daily routine to care for carpets appropriately.

This will help minimize the long-term effects of wear on your carpets.

Basic Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning a carpet is a good idea, and helps promote carpet longevity. While it may sound daunting at first, particularly if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, cleaning carpets is not as difficult as it sounds when you break it up into small chunks.

The first step to cleaning a good carpet involves vacuuming your carpet regularly. Not vacuuming attracts insects and other creatures into the carpet. Sweeping can also help keep a smallish carpet or fine weaved carpet looking its best.

Vacuuming in the direction of the weave will help your carpet look and feel its best. If your carpet has fringe you should avoid vacuuming this area as the vacuum may suck up the fringe and tear it. Small carpets should not be placed in the washing machine as this may also tear the carpet. Many launderers offer carpet cleaning services. You can also purchase a carpet cleaner to wash the carpets.

Sunlight can cause carpets to fade, so avoid exposing your carpet to direct sunlight as over time this can cause discoloration, or cause the material in your carpet to become brittle. There are many ways to display a carpet without exposing it to direct sunlight including by using very thin, see through curtains.

Using indirect sunlight is a great way to show off carpets.
